IDA INFRASTRUCTURE LOCAL RESOURCES INVESTORS AGRI-BUSINESS ALLIANCE FOR BALANCED GROWTH

Membership Requirements

The economic outlook for Orange County has never been brighter, and now the region’s development community has joined the Orange County Partnership to get that message out. The Alliance for Balanced Growth is a cooperative effort between area developers, landowners, commercial real estate professionals, engineers, land-use attorneys, construction services and the Orange County Partnership. Their mission is straightforward – to present a strong, unified voice for responsible development in Orange County.

The goal of the Alliance for Balanced Growth (ABG) has been to educate the public on the business and land-use planning advantages of commercial development and to learn cooperatively about issues they face. While our existing business parks offer ongoing economic development opportunities, the Alliance is designed to meet new challenges and to remain an effective, unified voice for commercial development in the County.

Although we compete on a day-to-day basis we are united in our vision. Developing Orange County’s commercial potential and managing that growth responsibly is the only way to keep Orange County healthy and strong.

Each year the ABG leadership meets to discuss and create initiatives that are to be addressed by the Alliance membership.

This year the top five initiatives are:

1. Increase Media Exposure through the mainstream media, radio and local publications through the creation of a column, interviews and email blasts.

2. Create Speaker Group to bring the message of balanced growth to service clubs, local chambers, school boards and planning departments among others.

3. Increase Membership Growth by endorsement from current members and opening enrollment to a wider spectrum of contributors.

4. Encourage Infrastructure Development by identifying strategic partners who can keep us informed on progress and results. Also identifying specific projects that may need our attention and support.

5. Better Municipal Communication and Cooperation through one-on-one outreach to individual municipalities, consulting engineers and local IDAs. Encourage weblinks between municipality websites and the ABG site with the goal of better cooperation and understanding.

Marketing

Helping the public understand the importance of industrial and office space growth to the County’s economic development and job market. This includes initiating a tax study that delineates exactly what percentage of a municipality’s school budget is paid for by its commercial businesses. The Marketing Committee will present its findings on the tax impact of economic development in a media and speaking campaign to accompany the release of the study.

Speculative Building

Encouraging speculative development in Orange County including the development of new business parks. This includes assistance in expediting the municipal approval process and offering prospects a choice of the best locations and sites with a minimum wait-time. ABG is developing a “Blueprint for Spec Building” which will act as a guide through the steps involved from beginning to end.

Infrastructure and Technology Needs

Ensuring that Orange County can meet the infrastructure needs of high-tech companies and top-notch corporate attractions. The establishment of a Shovel-Ready New York Site Plan by CH Energy is an example of the kind of program which needs to be created in order to speed up this development process.

The Alliance Committees meet on a monthly basis and the entire membership meets quarterly to share information and further identify areas of interest to all parties.
